 Biography of Jan Menses

Jan Menses was born and raised in Rotterdam in 1933. He is culturally rooted in the European traditions. The experiences of his childhood during the difficult years of the Nazi occupation of his homeland during World War II are still vivid in his mind. Subsequent experiences in the armed services and of student travels in Europe and North Africa have further colored his awareness.

Most of all, his conversion to the orthodox Jewish faith has added to the complex amalgam of the personal awareness’s that have shapes his art. His work has matured during the period he has lived in Montreal where he emigrated in 1960. There Menses has evolved away from the colorful, textural mode of his earlier efforts, reflective of the agitated, expressionist mode of his slightly older contemporaries in Holland and the other northern European schools, to a somber monochromatic line of development.

In these later works, the precision often characteristic of Dutch art occurs, but with a highly personal character of expression – mysterious, unsettling, elusive. In his later years his preferred form has been that of large drawings, rich in tone, precise in edge, conceived as series, in which the individual compositions complete in themselves, nonetheless gain added strength from their juxtaposition with each other.

The three main series of this genre are ‘Kaddish’, ‘Klippoth’ and ‘Tikkun’.

The artist now resides in Israel and maintains residence in Jerusalem and Tzfat. His gallery, located in the artist colony of Tzfat, is open to the public during the summer months.
